The 2012 ENR California Top 20 Under 40 competition, now in its second year, features an impressive lineup of professionals who have already made their marks in the industry.
The honorees range from structural engineers to company presidents and CEOs. Judges used several criteria to make their selections. They include achieving or progressing toward industry certifications, such as professional licensure or LEED AP; community service; industry involvement; diversity; and contributions to landmark projects in the region. Nominees also had to be based in California and could not have reached the age of 40 by Feb. 13, this issue's publication date.

Our panel of four judges described the 20 California winners as "great" or "exceptional" and also said that they had a difficult time narrowing the field of 41 nominees to the final 20. This year's judges included returnees Melody Spradlin, director-South Bay for Dome Construction Corp., San Jose, and Bryn Burke, president/owner of Vertical Constructors Inc., Santa Fe Springs. The other judges were Dan Geiger, executive director of the U.S. Green Building Council Northern California chapter, which is based in San Francisco, and Greg Eckstrom, vice president of California Drywall Co., San Jose.
The top vote-getter this year was Jeremy Livermore, 31, a structural engineer with AECOM, Newport Beach. Livermore, the judges said, has enhanced what already had been a strong reputation within the industry through his work on several high-profile projects, including the super-green NASA Ames Research Center/Sustainability Base in Mountain View; the Inland Empire Transportation Management Center in Fontana; and the Carl's Jr. headquarters office building in Anaheim.

When I was in a choir and I had a solo in an easter cantata called "No Greater Love" by John W Peterson, I memorized a direct quote from the gospels set to music about the temptation of Jesus.

Prime Cuts: Cry of the Broken, Alive in Us, God is Able
"God is Able" is Hillsong Live’s 20th release. After the odyssey of 20 albums, many things have changed. Most noticeably is the huge turnover rate of lead worship singers/songwriters. Gone are such former contributors such as Geoff Bullock, Miriam Webster, Russell Fragar, Marty Sampson, Steve McPherson and even the recent favorite Brooke Fraser (Ligertwood). Nevertheless, this Aussie Mega Church has kept a few pivotal mainstays: First, they have wisely stuck on to former worship pastor Darlene Zschech. Incubus to the success of Hillsong Music, it is through Zschech's leadership Hillsong Music has become such a phenomenon today. This is because she has the God-given ability to instill the awe of God's presence in the way she moves the church to worship. And even to this day, no worship leader from this mega church could fill Zschech's shoes. Thankfully Zschech is back again on this 20th release leading two songs and single-handedly wrote "Cry of the Broken." However, her substantial subdued role relative to their earlier albums is certainly the church's greatest misstep. Second, Hillsong has never been reticent in their proclamation of their praise of God from an evangelical confessional stance. Over the years, they have been bold in dressing such a lofty message in anthemic crescendo building stadium-filling numbers. Again "God is Able" is chock full of such Godly endeavors.
Easily the best tracks here are the ones led by Darlene Zschech. While the other lead worship singers have a tendency to treat each track as though it is a concert performance, it is only Zschech who truly functions as a worship leader when she leads the congregation to be engaged in the worship of the Almighty. This is most evident on "Alive in Us"--a bold and catchy proclamation of the transforming power of Christ's resurrection. Not since 2008's "Savior King" have we heard Zschech lead an up-tempo anthemic song so "Alive in Us" is a refreshing listen. Zschech single-handedly wrote and sang "Cry of the Broken." Without the regular bevy chorus of singers, "Cry of the Broken" features just the voice of Zschech beautifully sung over a soft sonic bed of strings and keyboard. Taking comfort from Psalm 90, Zschech pours out her heart to God assuring us that our God hears the contrite. Tender, heart warming and so worshipful--"Cry of the Broken" is more than a song, it ought to be the daily prayer of every child of God.
Zschech can be heard quite prominently as she offers companion vocals to Ben Fielding on the mid-tempo "My Heart is Overwhelmed." While many worship songs today are more testimonial in nature, "My Heart is Overwhelmed" has God at its cynosure and how that changes us. Zschech's harmony vocals on the latter half of the song add so much more dimension and depth to the song. Another Ben Fielding-led song "The Lost Are Found" is also worthy of mention. A building simmering rocker that explodes with a catchy chorus. The title cut "God is Able," led by current worship pastor Rueben Morgan, is this album's "Mighty to Save." Stately, bombastic and extremely catchy, "God is Able" is destined to be a future worship classic. Conspicuously missing is Brooke Fraser, and so in place of her is Annie Garratt who sings lead with Jad Gillies on the song on the somehow average ballad "Unending Love."
Over the last couple of albums, their music has moved closer and closer to that of their sister band Hillsong United. This means that they have moved closer to a rock based template with a lesser emphasis on corporate worship. Joel Houston lends his muffled voice on the Coldplay influence soft rocker "Rise," Jonathan Douglass gives a rousing shout out on the fiery "The Difference" and "Narrow Road" receives a meditative read by Dave Ware. Though these are all average worship songs there is not much that sets each of these lead vocalists apart. And these songs could easily be thrown on a United disc. In short, let Darlene Zschech lead more of the songs--she is and has been the face of Hillsong Live. More importantly, she is not just a singer, she is an anointed worship leader who not only feels the songs deeply and she inspires us to worship too.

After serving at Hillsong Church for 25 years alongside Pastors Brian and Bobbie Houston, renowned worship leader Darlene Zschech will be leaving the megachurch to assume a senior pastor role at a nearby Pentecostal church.
She will be leading Hope Unlimited Church, near Syndey, with her husband, Mark, beginning in January 2011.
“We are incredibly honored and VERY excited to be heading into this great opportunity to serve the people of the Central Coast and everyone at Hope Unlimited Church. We are entering into what we believe will be a wonderful and fruitful season ahead,” Mark Zschech said in a statement earlier this week.
“We really feel like God's called us to the central coast and to really have an impact there. And really the two words that are on our hearts are to lead and to build. We're going to build a church for everybody.”
Hope Unlimited Church began searching for senior leaders several months ago, in conjunction with Australian Christian Churches (ACC) State and National leadership.
“Our aim was to find God’s choice, those who would lead us into the incredible destiny God has for our house,” the church stated. “God is faithful!”
Hillsong pastor Brian Houston expressed good wishes for the Zschechs.
“I feel good about it ... and our church leaders and elders feel good about it because Mark and Darlene have really sown into our church for a long, long time,” he said in a message to his mega-congregation, which is also part of the ACC denomination, formerly Assemblies of God.
“The Zschech family have been an integral part of our church family and whilst they will be greatly missed, we feel as though this is a good and a timely step for them.”
The Zschechs will still be involved in various Hillsong praise and worship projects, including an upcoming live album as well as Hillsong conferences.
Mark highlighted, "Whilst Darlene will remain very much in her various roles in worship ministry and myself in mission and media endeavors in the developing world, we have always been local church people."
They will begin in their new role as senior pastors at Hope Unlimited Church on Jan. 23.

If I start out with δίδωμι, let google transliterate it for me to dίdomi and paste that version into the search box that I am using to work up the blog posts located here I don't get any search result. I have to remove the first ί in the transliterated word and type in a regular i instead "didomi" which results in this web page:

Therefore in those instances that I don't know how to transliterate, google translate can transliterate for me.

Rebecca St. James is back with a bang!

April 2011 is a special month for her for two reason: at 33 she is getting married for the first time, and she is releasing her first studio album in five years. This 10-song album is easily accessible and filled with upbeat and meaningful worship songs.

Rebecca has gone back to her roots: worship. Eight of the ten songs are new, and five of these are written by her; this is the strength of the album. Her lyrics flow from a heart sold out to Jesus. The twin themes of trust and surrender are evident. As she said in an interview, "I finally realized that I have to rely on Him."

The album opens with three powerful songs, each underscoring the subtheme of fearing no evil. "I will praise you," the title track and first of her new songs, communicates the message of living in hope, not fear, even in the middle of the storms of life. It sets the tone and draws the listener in immediately. We are worshipping an awesome God from the get-go. The second track, "You Never Let Go," is a cover of a Matt Redman song. Catchy and foot-tapping, this song will be familiar to many. It emphasizes God's perfect love which casts out fear. The third track is her current single, "Shine Your Glory Down," another of her creations. Of all the songs on this album, here her breathy voice is reminiscent of earlier albums. If the album opens with worship, "Shine Your Glory Down" moves toward mission. Rebecca wrote this and wants to make an impact on the world for God and to shine for him. By being a light where we are placed, we can make a difference in the world; by loving the people around us with his love we can have an impact for his glory. And then "every heart will sing your praise."

After the pacing of this opening trilogy, the album slows down, becoming hauntingly melodic in places, although without diminishing in praise or worship. "You Still Amaze Me," another St. James song, has echoes, lyrically, back to "Amazing Grace".

The fourth song written by her, "The Kindness of God," offers a vehicle to show her vocal range. This track has a distinctive celtic sound, reminding me a little of the old hymn, "Be Thou My Vision." Here the love of God comes out as a second subtheme of the album, and it is this love which casts out fear and forms the bedrock for trust and surrender.

As the album moves through its second half, the songs get gentler and quieter, more worshipful and personal. "You Hold Me Now" looks ahead to the day when we will lock eyes with Jesus as he holds us close in heaven: "all my fears swept away in the light of your embrace."

The closing song, "You Make Everything Beautiful" is sung to piano and keyboard alone. With no percussion or guitars, this feels intimate. Having written it, St James is singing this as a personal prayer to God and we get to listen in, almost as eavesdroppers. A prayer of trust, she sings "in its time, in your time." Not the best song on the album, yet it is a fitting close to the album. This serenity prayer surrenders to God, "purify my soul, beautify my soul," a prayer we all can affirm and grasp.

The wait was worth it. In his time God has gifted her with some terrific music and this will certainly be one of the best albums of the year. We'll be singing these songs in church before she celebrates her first anniversary!

Prime Cuts: I Will Praise You, You Never Let Go, You Hold Me Now

"I Will Praise You" has been designated by St. James as her most personal album to date. After her most disappointing "If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something" where St. James literally hides her heart behind walls of electronic rock beats, this new disc finds her bearing her soul. Vocally, St. James sounds more relaxed, rejuvenated and more heartfelt. Maybe she connected more with the lyrics as she co-wrote 5 out of the 10 cuts here. Lyrically these tracks are by no means parochial. Rather, they are expressions of St. James earnest heart cries to God that are Biblically informed and poetically animated. Never one to be picket by one form of musical style--this new disc finds St. James damping in spry electronica, edgy pseudo-alternative, anthemic pop and heart wrenching balladry. This is thanks in part to new label honcho and producer Mark Miller. For the uninformed, Miller is the front man of the country group Sawyer Brown. And while the group was in hiatus, he had taken the seat of producing the latest discs for Bucky Covington and Casting Crowns.

While St. James' 2004 album "Live Worship--Blessed Be Your Name" was an entire cover affair, here she has restrained herself to only three cuts. The best being Hillsong's recent worship staple "You Hold Me Now." Sung in a key lower than the original with a more subdued ending, "You Hold Me Now" is one of the very few songs that address the issue of the beauty of heaven and how that beauty transforms our here and now. Matt Redman (who seems to be a favourite of St. James) gets another chance with "You Never Let Me Go." Most satisfying is how the atmospheric guitars and the crashing drums build up to the chorus where St. James sings addictively, "Through the calm and through the storm/Oh no, You never let go/In every high and every low/Oh no, You never let go." One Sonic Society's "Almighty God" is the final cover--here St. James in her imitable way scampers to give expression to God's grandeur in one of her most intense and dramatic performances ever.

As for her originals, the title cut "I Will Praise You" finds St. James acquiesced to the current sounds of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga with its thumping drum beats and rhythmic groove. Yet she does not sell out as far as the lyrics are concerned: a gorgeous testimony of grounded trust in God regardless of our circumstances, this is worship tunes at its palatable best. "When the Stars Burn Down," on the other hand, is a soothing ballad that is described by St. James as the "ultimate love song" where we meet Jesus the lover of our souls. While 'The Kindness Of Our God' takes on a Celtic detour accompanied by bagpipes and some soaring strings. Utilizing the prayer of St. Francis as its template, "You Make Everything Beautiful" is a piano ballad that exudes so much sincere warmth.

Though a couple of tracks such as "In a Moment" and "Shine Your Glory Down" border along as average, this album as a whole is a vast improvement from St. James' last studio album "If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something." On the whole, it is more worshipful, more God-centered, more varied in its lyrically themes and melodies and certainly more heartfelt. You just have to agree with St. James that this truly is her at her personal best.

Acts 2:1-4

And when the day of Pentecost was in process of being fulfilled, they were all together in the same place. And suddenly there came an echoing sound out of heaven as of a wind borne along violently. And it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues that had the appearance of fire, these tongues being distributed among them, and one of these tongues took up a position upon each of them. And all were controlled by the Holy Spirit and began to be uttering words in languages different from their own native language and different from those spoken by the others, even as the Spirit kept giving them ability to speak forth, not in words of everyday speech but in words belonging to dignified and elevated discourse.

Acts 2:5-11

And there were in Jerusalem Jews who were in residence there, devout men who reverenced God, from all nations of those under heaven. Now, when this sound was heard, the multitude came together and was at a loss to understand this, because they were hearing each one of them uttering words in his own dialect. And they were astounded to the point of being beside themselves, and went to wondering, saying, Look. To be sure. Are not all these who are speaking Galilaeans? And as for us, how can it be possible that we are hearing each one in our own private dialect in which we were born, Parthians and Medes, and Elamites, and those who had taken up residence in Mesopotamia, and also in Judaea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia, also in Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, also sojourners from Rome, both Jews and Gentile converts to Judaism, Cretes and Arabians, we are hearing them uttering in our languages the mighty works of God?

And they were all astounded to the point of being beside themselves, and were wholly at a loss what to think, saying one to another, What does this desire to be? But others of a different class, mocking, were saying, They have been filled brimful with sweet wine with the result that they cannot hold any more.

Acts 2:14-18

But Peter having taken his stand with the eleven raised his voice and said to them in words which belonged to dignified and elevated discourse, Men of the Jewish race, and all those who are residents of Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words, for, as for you, these are not intoxicated as you suppose, for it is nine o’clock in the morning. But this is that which has been spoken through the intermediate agency of the prophet Joel and is on record, And it shall be in the last days, says God, that I will abundantly bestow my Spirit upon all flesh. And your sons shall speak forth by divine inspiration, also your daughters. And your young men shall see visions. And your old men shall dream with dreams. Yes, and upon men and women who are the slaves of others and yet belong to me, in those days I will abundantly bestow my Spirit and they shall speak by divine inspiration.

Acts 2:19-21

And I will bring forth miracles of a startling, amazement-awakening character in the heaven above and miracles upon the earth whose purpose it is to attest the workings and words of God, blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the day of the Lord comes, that great, conspicuous day. And it shall be that everyone whoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.

Acts 2:22-24

Men, Israelites. Hear these words at once. Jesus, the Nazarene, a man who has been demonstrated to you by God to be that which He claims to be, this demonstration taking the form of miracles that show the power of God, and miracles that are a startling, imposing, amazement-awakening portent, and miracles that have for their purpose the attestation of the divine mission of the one who performs them, which miracles God performed through His intermediate agency in your midst even as you yourselves know positively; this One, having been delivered up by the counsel of God which [in the council held by the Trinity] had decided upon His destiny, even by the foreordination of God which is that act fixing His destiny, by wicked hands you crucified and killed, whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death because it was not possible for Him to be mastered by it.

Acts 2:25-28

For David says concerning Him, I was beholding the Lord always before my face, because He is at my right hand in order that I might not be agitated and disturbed,, thrown out of my sober and natural state of mind. On this account my heart was made glad and my tongue rejoiced exceedingly. Yes, moreover also my flesh shall still pitch its tent upon hope, there to rest, because you will not leave my soul surviving in that place in the unseen world reserved for the human dead. Neither will you permit your Holy One to see corruption. You made known to me the courses of thought, feeling, and action of life [that life, the eternal life given a believer in salvation]. You will fill me with joy with your countenance.

Acts 2:29-36

Men. Brothers. I may speak to you with utter freedom of speech concerning our progenitor David, that he came to his end in death and was entombed. And his sepulchral memorial is among us even to this day. Therefore, being a foreteller of future events, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that from his offspring He would seat One upon his throne, he having seen this beforehand, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ [the Messiah], that neither was He left surviving in that place in the unseen world reserved for the human dead, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, whose witnesses we all are, bearing testimony to what we have seen and heard and learned concerning Him. Therefore, by the right hand of God exalted, and having received from the presence of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He bestowed this which you are both seeing and hearing; for David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet. Assuredly therefore, let the whole house of Israel be knowing that God made Him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.

Acts 2:37-41

Now, having heard this, they were stung to the heart with poignant sorrow. And they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, What shall we do, men, brothers? And Peter said to them, Have a change of mind, that change of mind being accompanied by abhorrence of and sorrow for your deed, and let each one of you be baptized upon the ground of your confession of belief in the sum total of all that Jesus Christ is in His glorious Person, this baptismal testimony being in relation to the fact that your sins have been put away, and you shall receive the gratuitous gift of the Holy Spirit, for to you is the promise and to your children and to all who are at a distance, as many as the Lord our God shall with a divine summons call to himself. And with many other words he solemnly affirmed, and kept on exhorting them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. Then those who received his word with approval were immersed. And there were added to their number on that day about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:42-47

And they were giving constant attention to the teaching of the apostles and to that which they held in common with them, and to the breaking of the bread and to the gatherings where prayers to God were offered. And a reverential fear came upon every soul. And many miracles that excited amazement and attesting miracles were performed by the apostles. And all those who believed were gathered together as a unit and were holding all things in joint-participation, and were selling their houses and lands and other possessions and kept on distributing them to all, according as anyone was having a need. And daily they continued to remain in the temple, in perfect unanimity, breaking bread at home, partaking of food together in gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having the good will of the people. And the Lord kept on adding to them daily those who were being saved.

William Jennings Bryan, Secretary of State of the U.S., was interviewing a man who was seeking a diplomatic position to China. Bryan warned the candidate that it was necessary to qualify as a linguist of Chinese. "Can you speak the Chinese language?" Bryan asked.
The man was up to the occasion. Looking Secretary Bryan in the eye, he responded, "Try me. Ask me something in Chinese." Bryan, confounded for he also did not know Chinese, could not counter the candidates question. And in "Think and Live: Challenging Believers to Think and Thinkers to Believe" editor Paul Hughes provides the reader a resource to understand and speak the language required to advance Christian truth. The contributors provide much to ponder as they teach the reader how to think as well as communicate biblically and effectively.

In "Think and Live" the contributors discuss:

- The importance of the use of Logic (pp. 47-58)
- Essential elements of apologetics (p. 59)
- Faith within worldviews (pp. 60-61)
- Understanding the significant difference between science & Scientism (p. 65)
- The meaning of Virtue and the necessity of Love
- Faith has its reasons (p. 60)
- Practical applications of apologetics (pp. 75-84)

This very helpful and breezy volume is littered with numerous quotes from C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, C.T. Studd, John Calvin, and other notable figures. Chapters touch on miracles, the problem of evil, morality, the Messiahship of Jesus, and a short introduction concerning apologetic methods. "Think" points out the strengths of apologetic methods as well as their perceived weaknesses. On the apparent weakness of Presuppositional Apologetics the book opines more harshly toward Presuppositional Apologetics than the other methods discussed: "The downside [of the Presuppositional Apologetic method] is that "it falls more easily to soft postmodernism." But "not all who practice this method [Presuppositional Apologetics] go this far, but there is a danger" (p. 81). And he adds the off-putting comment "yes, there are some friendly presuppositionalists" (p. 81).
